Set up your BOROUX System
Before installing BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters, set up your BOROUX legacy™ Water Filter System according to the instructions included with your system.
Priming the fluoride filters
Priming means to fully saturate the interior and exterior of the filters with water. The filters must be primed before use, and after cleaning.
Follow the instructions below to prime the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters using the blue threaded priming adapter.

Step 1
Remove the paper wrapping from the filter, then remove the plug from the filter’s cap. Screw the threaded priming adapter into the filter.

Step 2
Attach the blue silicone priming tool to the faucet, making sure you pull the primer up as far as possible to create a good seal with the water spout.

Step 3
Adjust the water flow so that a 12 oz cup fills within 45 to 60 seconds.
Important: Use only cold water.

Step 4
While the water is flowing, gently push the filter with threaded priming adapter into the primer.

Step 5
If the blue primer inflates as shown in the illustration, or if there is excessive water leakage around the primer, re-adjust the water flow so that a 12 oz. cup fills within 45 to 60 seconds.

Step 6
After 1 to 2 minutes, water will be visible on the filter surface. Continue to prime for 1 to 2 more minutes, until water beads on the entire filter surface.

Step 7
Keep water flow running. Remove the filter from the primer. Set the filter aside on a clean surface.

Step 8
Repeat steps 1 through 7 for each filter.
Note: You should not discard any blue priming parts. Save them for future use.
Installing fluoride filters in legacy system
BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters fit in most gravity-fed water filter systems. They are compatible if the stems fit into the holes and the chamber completely encapsulates the filters. Do not use tools. Repeat these steps for each filter.

Step 1
Make sure the threaded priming adapter has been removed from the fluoride filter.
Note: Place the upper chamber on a towel will prevent scratching while installing the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters.

Step 2
Remove the wing nut from the BOROUX foundation filter. Then place the black silicone washer provided with your BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter onto the stem of the BOROUX foundation filter as shown in the illustration.

Step 3
Hold the BOROUX foundation filter (inside the upper chamber — not shown) with one hand, and the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter with the other hand. Screw the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter onto the threads of the BOROUX foundation filter. Do not over-tighten.
Repeat for remaining filters.

Step 4
Install a stainless-steel shell onto each BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter. Position the slots on the shells to align with the pins on the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter, push the shell into place, then rotate slightly into the locking position.
Important: Do not over-tighten.
Important: To ensure proper water filtration, all BOROUX foundation filters must have a black sealing washer attached between the filter and the inside surface of the upper chamber.
Also, all BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters must have a black sealing washer attached between the filter and the outside surface of the upper chamber. See diagram.
Preparing the fluoride filters for use in legacy system
Follow the instruction below for optimum use of the system with BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filters.

Step 1
Place the upper chamber onto the lower chamber.

Step 2
Make sure the spigot is in the closed position, with the spigot handle turned to a 90 degree from the spigot base.

Step 3
Fill the upper chamber with cold or room temperature water and cover with the lid.
Important: To avoid overfilling:
1) For the BOROUX legacy compact (1.8 gal.), fill only to the bottom of the BOROUX logo inside the upper chamber.
2) For the BOROUX legacy (3 gal.), fill only to the top of the BOROUX foundation filters inside the upper chamber.

Step 4
Allow all the water to filter into the lower chamber. A small amount of water may remain in the upper chamber.

Step 5
Discard this first batch of water.

Step 6
Refill the upper chamber again and allow the water to filter to the lower chamber. Your system is now ready to enjoy!
Reminder: Be sure to follow the fill guidelines above to prevent overfilling.
Fluoride filter maintenance:
Your BOROUX system user guide includes regular cleaning instructions. When cleaning your system, remove the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter and the stainless-steel shell. Clean the stainless-steel shell inside and out. Clean the sealing washer. Rinse the outside of the BOROUX Proactive™ Fluoride Filter with cold water. Reinstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the filters have to be primed?
Priming the BOROUX filters is necessary for proper function. This procedure is what activates the carbon and breaks the surface tension, so that the contaminants get trapped, and the water gets through. The filter is made of very dense material and priming forces water through the material so that it’s entirely saturated. This is a crucial initial step for using the filters.
The media that the BOROUX filter is made of has a micropore structure. These micropores are miniscule which can create tiny pockets of air. Along with the high surface tension of the filter material, without being primed first, water cannot pass through those air bubbles. Priming uses water pressure to force water through those micropores so that when water is passing through only using gravity, it can. If the filters are not primed, the flow can be extremely slow, if not completely nonexistent.
What if I don’t see beads of water on my filter when priming?
Each filter is unique, some filters shows lots of water beads, others do not. As long as the filter is fully saturated, they are primed. Running water through the filter for 1-2 minutes fully saturates the filter.
How do I know if the filters are primed?
The buoyancy test can determine if the filters are fully primed.
- Fill the lower chamber or another large container with water
- Place the filters in this container with the stems up.
- If it sinks (or slightly floats), the filter is primed and ready to install in your system!
- If the filter bobs back up quickly, prime again.
