How Does the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter Work?
Upgrade your hydration with two-stage filtration. The BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter pairs perfectly with the BOROUX Foundation Filter. Together, the filters eliminate nearly all unwanted contaminants.
The first stage of filtering happens when the water passes through the tried-and-true, activated-carbon BOROUX Foundation Filter. The BOROUX Proactive Filter threads onto and attaches to the stem of the black BOROUX Foundation Filter. The second stage of filtration occurs when the water passes through the dual-action BOROUX Proactive Filter.
After passing through the filters in the upper chamber, water first comes in contact with the inner layer of high-efficiency granulated carbon filters in the lower chamber. Then, the water filters through the proprietary nano-carbon outer layer. With the patent-pending Upflow Design of the stainless steel shell, the water stays in contact with the outer layer for a prolonged period of time, providing superior filtration. The filtered water exits the top of the shell through the outlet holes. This allows for a nearly uniform use of the entire surface of the fluoride filters, from bottom to top.
What Materials are in the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter?
The BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter has two distinct filtration layers that work cohesively to trap fluoride. The inner layer is granulated carbon, a well-known method for preventing unwanted contaminants from passing. Small, loose granules of a mix of different carbons are packed into the center of the cylinder filter.
The outer layer of the filter is a nano-carbon. This blend of specialized carbon is molded into shape and holds the interior granulated carbon. The micropores of the nano-carbon exterior prevent contaminant molecules from flowing through. Fluoride molecules are particularly small, requiring specially formulated nano-carbon to be an effective barrier.
The BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter is encased in a surgical-grade stainless steel shell. The shell is made of food-grade 304 stainless steel, which is the highest quality of stainless steel available. It is FDA-approved for food contact, providing safety, and durability. The stainless steel reduces the risk of plastic leaching. The shell is the key component of the patent-pending Upflow Design technology, offering more protection against waterborne toxins.
No activated alumina
Other filters use alumina as an ingredient to block fluoride. BOROUX refuses to use alumina due to the link between aluminum and negative neurological effects
Activated alumina filters may allow trace amounts of aluminum to enter the water. In commercial systems, the effluent water can be treated to remove most of the aluminum in downstream processing. However, in point-of-use systems such as gravity-fed systems, removal of residual aluminum is challenging. Point-of-use systems, especially gravity-fed systems, have limited volume available for filtration media. Although alumina can be effective at reducing fluoride, it works best when a relatively large volume of alumina is present. Otherwise, performance begins to degrade almost immediately. BOROUX decided to avoid this potential exposure by developing a filter using media that does not contain aluminum.
Why is Fluoride-Free Water Important?
Fluoride is a known neurotoxin that is unfortunately added to most municipally treated water. This exposure exposes you and your loved ones to a compound with severe health effects. Fluoride calcifies the pineal gland, causing a slew of problems. This new offering makes remembering when to replace the filters easier and more seamless. Customers can customize the cadence of when they receive filter replacements. Depending on their unique water source, they will be able to select either three months, six months, or one year to automatically receive a new set of fluoride filters. Fluoride Filter Testing and Results
The new BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter was tested to 500 gallons (or 1000 gallons per pair of filters). The influent test water had a concentration of 0.7 ppm (parts per million) of fluoride.
According to data collected by the Fluoride Action Network, about 95% of the reporting domestic water suppliers in the U.S. have fluoride levels of 0.7 parts per million or less. Which is why our testing was performed at a fluoride concentration that is representative of what is found in the vast majority of households in the US.

The NSF 53 Standard has a test protocol for fluoride testing; the influent fluoride concentration required for certification to that standard is eight parts per million. About 95% of US households have a fluoride concentration of 0.7 parts per million or less. Due to the fact that the NSF 53 Standard requires testing at more than 11 times the level of fluoride actually found in most households in the U.S., BOROUX decided to test at a more relevant concentration so customers could better predict filter life in their home environment.
The BOROUX fluoride filter is currently undergoing testing to NSF 42 standards. This standard is for “Materials Only” and indicates that the materials used are safe.
