Does Alkaline Water Relieve Heartburn?

Could relief from the discomfort of heartburn be as simple as drinking water? Could a specific type of water help reduce acid reflux?

Water with a slightly higher pH (more alkaline) may help minimize symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux. BOROUX water filter systems can slightly raise the pH of most tap water, making it more alkaline.

A study published in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology found that drinking alkaline water could potentially supplement other treatments for reflux disease. Specifically, the study concluded that alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 deactivates pepsin, an enzyme linked to reflux disease, and may reduce stomach acidity.

How Does BOROUX Increase Water's pH Level?

BOROUX filters remove numerous acidic contaminants from tap water. By reducing these acidic compounds, the remaining water becomes more alkaline, naturally raising its pH. Depending on the water’s initial composition, BOROUX can increase pH by approximately 0.5 to 1 point on the pH scale, bringing it closer to an ideal alkaline range of 8–9, whereas neutral water has a pH of 7.

Understanding Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, often due to issues like obesity, hiatal hernia, pregnancy, or delayed stomach emptying. Eating large meals, fatty foods, or drinking alcohol and coffee can also trigger acid reflux, leading to a burning sensation in the chest or a lump-like feeling in the throat.

How Alkaline Water Can Help with Acid Reflux

Pepsin is a stomach enzyme that breaks down proteins, but when it escapes the stomach and reaches the esophagus, it can cause irritation and pain associated with reflux disease. Research suggests that alkaline water may deactivate pepsin and reduce its harmful effects. Studies have shown that pepsin becomes inactive at a pH level of 8.8, meaning alkaline water could help prevent or alleviate reflux symptoms.

According to researchers Jamie A. Koufman and Nikki Johnston, "pH 8.8 alkaline water instantly denatures pepsin, rendering it permanently inactive. In addition, it has good acid-buffering capacity, suggesting that the consumption of alkaline water may provide therapeutic benefits for patients with reflux disease."
