Disinfectant Reduction¹

While disinfection is essential for killing harmful microbes in water, the process can pose potential health risks commonly found in treated municipal water supplies. They form when chlorine or other disinfectants react with natural organic matter.

Health Risks

Disinfectants can increase the risk of cancer and reproductive issues. Filtering these contaminants ensures optimal drinking water quality.

Common Contaminants
  • Chloramine (respiratory issues)
  • Chlorine (digestive problems)

Learn More About Disinfectants

Microplastics and Nominal Particulate Class I Average Reduction Up to 98.9%¹

Microplastics, particulates and chlorine can enter your water through runoff from manufacturing plants, plastic degradation, and other industrial activities. They are pervasive in urban and industrial areas.

Health Risks

Exposure to these toxins can cause a range of health problems including cancers, hormonal disruptions, and organ damage. Ensuring your water is free from these toxins protects your long-term health.

Common Contaminants
  • Microplastics(BPA) (hormone disruptor)
  • Class I Particulates (digestive problems)

Important note for California and Iowa customers:

To comply with state regulations, BOROUX filters are only for use to reduce chlorine, chloramine, microplastics, and nominal Particulate Class I in California and Iowa.

Filter Capacity

We recommend replacing a pair of BOROUX Foundation Filters every 12 months. Filter lifespan will vary depending on source water quality and usage.

Dimensions

2.75” x 8.5” x 9.75”

Fits most gravity-fed water filtration systems and fluoride filters.

Warranty Coverage

The BOROUX Foundation Filters are warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover failures resulting from abuse, misuse, alteration, damage, failure to follow installation and use instructions, or wear consistent with the expected filter lifespan. If the product is deemed defective, we will replace it. Proof of purchase, a description of the product, and an explanation of the alleged defect must be provided to process a warranty claim.

Foundation Filter FAQs

What certifications do the BOROUX Foundation Filters have?

The BOROUX Foundation Filters are WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, NSF/ANSI/CAN 401, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. All of the certicate testing is performed by the Water Quality Assosciation (WQA).

How do the BOROUX Foundation Filters work?

BOROUX Foundation Filters work by absorbing and trapping contaminant molecules. The carbon attracts and absorbs molecules with a certain chemical charge. They stick to the carbon, like how a magnet attracts metal. The tiny pores of the carbon block are so small that they physically block and trap tiny particles. It's similar to a sieve or strainer.

How long do the filters last?

We recommend replacing a pair of BOROUX Foundation Filters every 12 months. Filter lifespan will vary depending on source water quality and usage.

A pair of filters is warrantied and guaranteed to effectively filter for 12 months.

What is the BOROUX filter made of?

A specialized blend of activated carbon.

The BOROUX Foundation Filter is not intended to filter microorganisms.

Why do some filters have a blue/pink/black stem saver?

We’re excited to announce an upgrade to our Foundation Filters: transitioning from the original blue stem savers to a new, integrated black stem saver design. Unlike the previous version, was attached to the Foundation Filters with a food grade adhesive, the new stem savers are precision molded directly into the filter. This streamlined, one-piece construction enhances product durability and reduces the need for adhesives. The result is a stronger, more reliable filter that meets our highest standards for performance and quality. The filters with a pink stem saver are only available for the states of California and Iowa.

Fluoride Filter FAQs

Why does my water have a slight taste when first using the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters?

When first using Boroux Fluoride Filters, it's pretty common to experience a slight earthy or mineral taste at first. This usually goes away after you prime the filters for about 5 minutes using the blue filter primer or 2 cycles with the automatic priming pump with hot water (around 100°F). Using the blue priming tool and higher water pressure can also help improve the taste.

Are BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters compatible with my existing Berkey® system and filters?

Yes, our BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters are designed to be fully compatible with Berkey® systems. They attach directly to the lower chamber of most standard gravity-fed filtration units. This allows you to continue using your existing setup while benefiting from BOROUX’s advanced fluoride-reducing technology.

However, we always recommend confirming thread size and chamber fit for your specific model to ensure seamless installation. If you need help determining compatibility, our team is here to assist!

Do I need the stainless steel shell for the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter?

Yes, the stainless steel shell is essential for proper performance. It supports our upflow design, which directs water from the bottom up—slowing the flow rate and increasing contact time between water and filtration media. This optimized interaction enhances fluoride reduction and overall effectiveness.

Do I need one BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter for each Foundation™ Filter?

Yes, you'll need one BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter for each BOROUX Foundation Filter in your system. The Proactive Fluoride Filters are designed as a 1-to-1 companion product, meaning each fluoride filter connects directly to one Foundation™ Filter.

This ensures balanced flow, proper filtration performance, and maximized fluoride reduction across your entire system.

Why can’t I purchase BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters in California or Iowa?

BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filters are not available to ship to California or Iowa due to state-specific regulations and compliance requirements. These states have unique laws regarding the sale of water filtration products that make certain contaminant reduction claims.

We're actively working to meet the necessary certification standards so we can make these filters available to residents in both states in the future.

How does the BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter work?

The BOROUX Proactive Fluoride Filter attaches to the stem of the BOROUX Foundation Filter and is suspended in the lower chamber.

The water passes through the BOROUX Foundation Filter. Then water first comes in contact with the granulated carbon in the inner layer of the fluoride filters.

Then, the water filters through the nano-carbon outer layer. The upflow design of the stainless steel shell, makes the water stay in contact with the outer layer for a prolonged period of time, providing superior filtration.

The filtered water exits the top of stainless steel shell through the outlet holes and into the lower chamber.
